One very basic point - make clear that the judge will instruct the jury as to the law that they are to follow in the case. Period. Remind them that their oath as jurors is to follow the law. Period. Avoid (as much as possible) all of the arguments, etc. that you can. You may want to consider a motion in limine especially as to speaking objections, and (when appropriate) ask for an instruction to disregard - that may help make things clear to the jurors.

You might also call Melissa Hightower at Williamson County Attorney. They have had dealings with this.

I tried one of these guys to a jury last year. The biggest issue, by far, was convincing the jury that the defendant made an informed choice to represent himself. A number of them had a hard time with the issue of a 20 year-old college student (mom and dad raised him with his beliefs) representing himself on a 3rd Degree Felony dope case.

Take the time to go through the law with respect to the admonitions given to a Defendant who chooses to represent himself. Stress that one of the great things about this country is that we have the right and freedom to make our own decisions--even ones not in our best interest.
