When the verdict was read by a court clerk at 11 a.m. after a little more than a day of deliberations, Burris chuckled briefly and exclaimed, "Yes!" In the court audience, Walker clenched her fist.

After jurors filed out, Burris sought the spotlight again, saying, "I'm going to Death Row, but there is no death penalty. So I'm fine with it."

He was referring to the fact that executions have been on hold in California since 2006, when a federal judge ordered the state to improve staff training and procedures for lethal injections.

Then, turning in his seat at the defense table, Burris began to curse the victims and their relatives. He told one of Everette's brothers, Ron Everette of Richmond, "Your brother's got a bullet in his brain."
