Successful screwdriver removal a 'miracle' for toddler

Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Girl OK after screwdriver accident
A fading black eye and a small puncture wound are the only visible reminders of the screwdriver a 2-year-old Farmington, Minn., girl plunged into her eye socket last week.

Teagan Gislason came home on Christmas Eve and is almost fully recovered, able to see the X-ray showing the tool embedded 2 inches into her brain through her eye socket.

"It was very, very scary," said her father, Neil Gislason. "I hope nobody ever has to see this happen to their child."

He called his daughter's recovery a "Christmas miracle" Wednesday night and said his daughter no longer needs pain medication and is only taking antibiotics to prevent infection.

"Her eye is pretty much healed. The black is almost gone. There's no ill effects," he said.

The toddler spent almost a week at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Gislason said she hurt herself near the end of services at St. Paul's Lutheran in Cannon Falls on Dec. 19.

He said his daughter wandered into a room where children have adult supervision during the church service. The girl found a screwdriver, he said, and moments later another adult saw it in her left eye.

Doctors took four hours to remove it.

Now things are returning to normal, Gislason said. He returned to work Thursday and it appears Teagan will make a full recovery.

"She's doing really well," he said. "We're so happy."

Monkey stashed in plane passenger's hat dies

Associated Press

NEW YORK A small monkey stashed in a man's hat during a flight to New York has died, but federal health authorities don't know why.

The fist-sized tamarin showed no signs of illness during a quarantine period, Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokeswoman Shelly Diaz said Wednesday. The agency had lifted the quarantine and was trying to find the animal a permanent home when it died, she said.

The primate was seized as its owner got off a plane at LaGuardia Airport on Aug. 7. It apparently escaped detection during a flight from Lima, Peru, and a stopover in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The forest-dwelling creature was spotted after it crept out and perched on its owner's ponytail during the flight to New York.

The owner was questioned and released. He told authorities he didn't realize the monkey's voyage was illegal.

Men shoot themselves in tattoo attempt

CHAPARRAL, N.M. (AP) -- Getting a tattoo can be a painful proposition, but usually it's just the needle you have to worry about. Two men trying to trace a loaded .357-caliber Magnum as a pattern for a tattoo accidentally shot themselves, the Otero County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Robert Glasser and Joey Acosta, both 22, were treated at a hospital in El Paso, Texas, after the shooting Thursday evening in nearby Chaparral.

Authorities said Glasser was struck in the hand when the gun accidentally went off, and Acosta was hit in the left arm. Their injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.

Parents face charges for foot amputation
Two Victoria parents face serious charges after they let their son's right foot become so infected that doctors had to amputate it.

Justice of the Peace Robert Whitaker charged the 26-year-old woman and 28-year-old man each with two counts of injury to a child on Jan. 24. Their names are being withheld to protect the identity of the child.

The parents knew the boy had spina bifida, and sores often developed on his legs and feet, according to police reports. A blister on the boy's right foot became infected after the family visited the beach in August.

When the mother noticed the blister was black and the boy had a fever, she took him to DeTar Hospital. From there, he was flown to a Galveston hospital, where his right foot was amputated, according to the report.

Thursday's charges allege the boy's foot could have been saved with proper medical attention.

Man dies after accidentally shooting himself at party

01:52 PM CST on Saturday, January 26, 2008

By MATTHEW HAAG / The Dallas Morning News

A man accidentally shot and killed himself at a South Dallas party early Saturday after showing off his pistol to friends, police said.

A group of friends were drinking in the 3400 block of Iroquois Street when Andreous Robinson, 20, went outside around 1 a.m. and shot a few rounds into the air.

Police said Mr. Robinson then returned inside and thought that he'd discharged all of the rounds, so he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, said Sgt. Bruce McDonald, a homicide officer.

Mr. Robinson was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Pennsylvania man charged with electrocuting wife during nip zip

JANUARY 25--A kinky sex escapade ended this week with the electrocution death of a Pennsylvania woman and the arrest of her husband for manslaughter. According to cops, Toby Taylor, 37, first claimed that his wife Kirsten was shocked by her hair dryer. But he then admitted that the couple was "into weird sexual behaviors," according to a probable cause affidavit. Taylor then explained that he hooks clips to his wife's nipples and "plugs the cord into a electric strip" and shocks her. On Wednesday evening, Taylor said, Kirsten removed her clothes, attached the clips, and shocked herself. He then picked up the electric strip and shocked her several more times, adding that he had placed a piece of electric tape over her mouth during the jolts. After the last shock, Kirsten, 29, "fell over on to her face." Taylor initially thought his wife was joking, but quickly realized she was unconscious. He then dressed her in preparation for driving to the hospital, but instead called 911 when she stopped breathing. Taylor, pictured in the below mug shot, told investigators that the couple had "been engaging in electric shock sex and other types of extreme bondage for about 2 years." He was charged yesterday with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment and was jailed in the York Count lockup (where he remains in custody on $100,000 bail).

Man loses ear as he flees police
LA JOYA, Texas A man driving a car full of suspected illegal immigrants lost his ear as he tried to flee from police.

The 22-year-old Mexican national had turned into a brushy field from a farm-to-market road Sunday when he tried to open the door and jump from the car, said Joe Cantu, a La Joya police spokesman.

The car door bounced against a tree and slammed shut on the man's head, cleanly severing his ear, police said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement charged Juan Jose Padilla-Escutia on Monday with knowingly and recklessly transporting eight undocumented immigrants, Harlingen television station KGBT reported.

Police and Border Patrol agents found four of the six passengers who fled the car after it came to a stop. Authorities also discovered four people in the car's trunk who were thought to be illegal immigrants from El Salvador and Honduras, Cantu told The (McAllen) Monitor.

Police had stopped the driver for speeding. But he hit the gas after stopping beside of the road. After the accident, he was taken to a McAllen hospital, where he remained Monday night.

Double-dog dare no joke after tongues really stick
Two boys learn the truth in movies after re-enacting A Christmas Story
Associated Press

CHESTERTON, IND. Two fourth-grade boys mimicking a scene from the movie A Christmas Story wound up with their tongues stuck to a frozen flagpole.

Gavin Dempsey and James Alexander were serving on flag duty at Jackson Elementary School Friday morning, with the job of raising and lowering the school's flags. They decided to see if their tongues really would stick to the cold metal.

"I decided to try it because I thought all of the TV shows were lies, but turns out I was wrong," Gavin said.

Karen Alexander, James' mother, said her son told her he got the idea from the movie, which is based on stories about a boy growing up in northwest Indiana in the 1940s.

"I can't believe he did it, but they learned their lesson," she said.

James said he plans to eat a lot of ice cream to help nurse his wound.

"When you're young, you're just messing around," he said.

Billie Dempsey, Gavin's mom, said a nurse called them to tell them the boys' tongues were bleeding.

"The nurse asked them, 'OK, who double-dog dared who?'" Billie Dempsey said, a reference to a phrase that a character in the movie used to dare another child to stick his tongue to the pole.

Odessa man says he was performing exorcism when wife died
11:42 AM CST on Sunday, February 3, 2008

Associated Press
ODESSA, Texas - A man accused of killing his wife said he was holding her facedown on the floor during an exorcism when the devil entered his body and caused her to die, according to a probable cause statement.

Jan David Clark, 60, of Odessa was arrested Friday after authorities went to his home and found Susan Kay Clark's body wrapped in a bed sheet with a cross and sword on top of it.

Sgt. Gary Duesler said the Ector County Sheriff's Office went to the home before dawn Friday after being told that David Clark had called a friend and said his 59-year-old wife was dead. Clark told investigators he had his wife pinned on the floor of their carpeted master bathroom when she died.

Clark was charged with murder and remained in the Ector County jail on Sunday on $300,000 bond. He has declined comment at the jail. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.
