Hey, has anybody seen contracts authorized by TCCP 103.001 with county or municipal government providing for private collection of fines, fees, restitution, and other debts or costs? The gods of delinquent tax lawyers presented our court with a contract providing for collection of delinquent fines, fees, restitution and other costs due or assessed by the district, county, and jusice courts. The statute authorizes a contingent fee of 30%.

Now, we can put this whole criminal justice system on a paying basis. We can recruit old PI lawyers and start this thing to ginning.

Or do we want to do this ourselves? last Session Todd Staples filed SB 1610, which allowed prosecutors to charge a fee -- like the hot check fund fee -- to cover the cost of collecting delinquent fees and fines. Seems that some prosecutors might be interested in doing this....

What are your thoughts?
