To dispose of copious quantities of slightly used granite without having to advertise and auction? Or-if we have to - to handle it in a way that one set of advertisements covers us pretty much until it's gone? A nonprofit in another county wants some of the stuff, and we are really willing to let it go if they will come get it...just hate to run up the costs for the advertising!

To paraphrase very roughly, subsection 263.152(a)(4) of the Local Government Code allows a county to donate surplus or salvage property to a charity within the county if the commissioners determine it's cheaper to do it this way, it serves a public purpose, and the county receives adequate consideration, such as the charity carting it off.

However, your charity is not within the county, so this section wouldn't apply.

Maybe you can find a charity inside the county willing to take constructive possession of the granite and then work with the outside charity to get the stuff hauled off.

I had originally posted something similar to Mack's reply, but his is better. You could see if another county or the City of Sweetwater wanted it. Then you could rely on sec. 263.152(a)(1) to avoid the need for advertising. Otherwise, there may be a hard rock auction in your future.
