retirement "gift"
Long time sheriff is getting ready to retire from county.....he would like the rifle he has carried for 20+ years, which is county property......any ideas on how the county could accomplish that? the value of the rifle is between $350 and $1000.

As a follow up.......the Sheriffs office is considering upgrading its rifle inventory and may be needing to dispose of several older rifles.....how do others dispose of older, but still valuable ,firearms?
I can see some potential problems simply putting them in a county surplus auction. Do they need to be sold to a licensed firearms dealer?
Any help?

An answer to your first question

The legislature approved this practice last session. See LGC Sec. 170.002. It's left up to the commissioners to determine the value, but there aren't many more procedural details than that.

I think we destroyed our last batch rather than face the question.

To be on the safe side, we have always disposed of surplus guns by trade-in. Since we have to acquire new guns from a licensed firearms dealer, that necessarily means we are disposing of the old guns to a licensed dealer. The authority is in 263.152(a)(2) local gov code.
