I found Judge Keasler's opinion on the subject of dicta in Watts, 99 S.W.3d at 614-5 to be well worth reading, especially his discussion of why we have dicta. It seems to me most lawyers probably search out (or create) opportunities for "self-expression". If we were tame, we might not be willing to spend all our time fighting someone else battles.
