From the macro perspective, the move could deal a blow to global efforts to legalize marijuana — a movement that through legal medicinal sales has been making steady gains in the United States, where even televangelist Pat Robertson has come out in favor of treating cannabis like alcohol in the eyes of the law. Now, opponents could seize on the rolling back of tolerance by even the accommodating Dutch as evidence that legalization might not work as well as advocates claim. Details.

Interesting Article. But I noted that they are not shutting down the "pot cafes" for the Dutch,; just for the tourists. The article seems to indicate the problem lies not in getting stoned, but in another bugger we face every day: "......Enforcement of a new law banning all but Dutch residents from pot “coffee shops” started in southern cities in the Netherlands, where drug-related organized crime became one of the main drivers of the new regulations." Can the crime be taken out of pot trafficking if it is decriminalized? The Dutch seem to think so, but only when foreigners are not involved.
