Sometimes, I think we take for granted that people accept the rule of law. When we elect a new president, regardless how the vote came out, we do accept that the person has the right to rule, at least until the next election. But, what is going on in Mexico should show us just how fragile the rule of law can become:

"Gunmen murdered the recently installed police chief in the border city of Nuevo Laredo shortly before midnight Wednesday in a direct challenge to the new state governor's vow to end the gangland mayhem in the troubled state bordering south Texas."

Details.

And perhaps this is why prosecutors are very protective of the rule of law.

Rob Kepple has some good words on the subject in his column in this month's new Texas Prosecutor. He congratulates those prosecutors who recently defended the rule of law in hearings held by judges who chose to ignore the law and bend to the clamor of a particular special interest group.

Thanks, Rob, for noting the work of those prosecutors in standing up to the media and a mob mentality in pushing for application of the rule of law over a social agenda. Be sure to read his column in your Texas Prosecutor.
