A bank in Florida refused to cash a check for an armless man because he could not provide a thumbprint.

Well of course they did. How would they ever be able to properly identify an armless man in the future without a print?

As a city boy moved to the country, I was fascinated to learn about steer validation, taking the nose print of a steer to confirm the steer's ID for a 4-H or FFA livestock show. Why not on a check?
