Bail for illegal immigrants accused of serious crimes can be raised to prevent federal officials from deporting them before their cases can be heard, the state Supreme Court ruled yesterday.

The unanimous decision reversed an appellate court ruling in which a higher bail was rejected after the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on a defendant accused of sexual assault.
