I received word this evening that Ed Lasof, longtime Misdemeanor Chief at Fort Bend County District Attorneys office, has passed away. It is my understanding that services are be scheduled for Wednesday, and I will post here for his many loyal friends and former prosecutors around the state as soon as I receive the details. In addition to being an excellent trainer, he could try the hell out of a lawsuit himself. He and Mike Elliott of Fort Bend prosecuted former Oiler Warren Moon for Domestic Violence in a nationally covered trial several years before the OJ case arose. Ed came to prosecution late in life. From 1992 until his retirement in the early 2000's, he was a fixture at the Fort Bend County District Attorneys office, and trained many young attorneys about matters important in law and in life. Being surrounded by young people kept Ed vibrant, in my opinion. Ed was able to teach many an intern and new lawyer about the way law was meant to be practiced, with honor, in a day and age with that attribute is often forgotten. Prior to coming to Fort Bend, Ed had been in private practice in Houston, Texas and had served as an Associate Judge in the Family Courts of Harris County for a number of years. I tried many cases with Ed, and worked many hours with him during several 1990's campaigns for John Healey, the Fort Bend D.A. I called him "Fast Eddie", because when he working on an election sign crew full of folks half of his age, you had to keep him from outworking us all. He could tell a good joke and like many native Texans, was born a storyteller. He helped construct Rice Stadium while he was in college and he had so many great stories about the 40's and 50's in Houston and in Texas that were simply a hoot. He is one of those people that made many, including myself, a better person and a better lawyer by virtue of his friendship. Perhaps one of the things I admire most about Ed was his loyalty to Gil Epstein and Gil's family. | ||
