Seems to me Stokvis could be a little troubling for most officers who think they have obtained consent to look (throughout) someone's car. Guess you need to ask everyone present for consent, at least with respect to any purses. | ||

I have always taught our recruits that when the driver (or the owner if he or she happens to be a passenger rather than the driver) gives consent to search, the consent does not automatically extend to the personal belongings of other persons in the vehicle. The officer either needs that person's consent or probable cause which is why in an opinion issued the same day as Stovkis, the same panel of the Amarillo Court of Appeals ruled an officer's search of a passengers purse without her consent was lawful(he had PC she had drugs in the purse).
