Thanks to those who called me. He is a criminal defense attorney and professor at Texas State University. He testified outside the presence of the jury that Royce Smithey should not be allowed to testify as an expert in prison conditions because his evidence is anecdotal and biased. That didn't work, and the jury never saw him.
