This isn't a civil rights lawsuit; it's a claim for unpaid royalties.

Liberian Ex-Rebel Confesses to Killings

By JONATHAN PAYE-LAYLEH
The Associated Press
Monday, January 21, 2008; 5:33 AM
MONROVIA, Liberia -- One of Liberia's most notorious rebel commanders, known as Gen. Butt Naked, has returned to confess his role in terrorizing the nation, saying he is responsible for 20,000 deaths.

Joshua Milton Blahyi, who now lives in Ghana, returned this week to face his homeland's truth and reconciliation commission, this time wearing a suit and tie. His nom de guerre is derived from his platoon's practice of charging naked into battle, a technique meant to terrify the enemy.

Other warlords, though, have refused to ask forgiveness, dismissing a commission many in Liberia see as toothless. Blahyi is urging other former killers to come forward as the country founded by freed American slaves in 1847 struggles to recover from past horrors.

"I could be electrocuted. I could be hanged. I could be given any other punishment," the 37-year-old Blahyi said in a weekend interview following his truth commission appearance last week. "But I think forgiveness and reconciliation is the right way to go.

"I have been looking for an opportunity to tell the true story about my life _ and every time I tell people my story, I feel relieved."

Wouldn't you love to be able to work that into a closing statement?

We hear some version of that every week. It's called justice v. mercy.

Okay. What is the quote?

"People cry for justice, but beg for mercy." Is this right, I heard it during a CLE somewhere.

Women Spot 'Unencumbered' Motorist

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (AP) -- Word that a man was caught driving in the buff through town has Mayor Marion Presley hustling to get the real skinny out about the Illinois community: West Frankfort is not a nudist colony.

Police arrested Justin Flora, 34, of Marion, Ill., on Monday and charged him with two counts of public indecency after several female motorists reported him driving without a stitch of clothing.

Police Chief Jeff Tharp says Flora said he just liked to drive unencumbered to check out the ladies.

Tharp says Flora insisted he didn't mean to offend any one in the southern Illinois town of 8,200.

Flora doesn't have a listed home telephone number and couldn't be reached for comment.

Police: Man trying to trick SMU students into posing nude
09:44 PM CST on Friday, February 15, 2008

By RUSS AARON / The Dallas Morning News
Orange fliers dotted the Southern Methodist University campus Friday as police warned students about a man trying to trick female students into posing nude.

Campus police have received at least 10 complaints since Wednesday from women who have either been approached or allowed their pictures to be taken, although no one has been photographed without clothes, police said.

The man, who police said goes by the name Dean Kelly, has approached students at the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports, Moody Coliseum and nearby Park Cities Plaza.

SMU Police Chief Richard Shafer said Mr. Kelly claims to be connected to MTV when he approaches female students. He asks if they want their picture taken and leads them to believe that a professional makeup artist will be at the photo shoot.

However, after arriving at the location of the photo shoot, the women found no makeup artist and equipment that seemed below the standards of a professional photographer, Chief Shafer said. He said he didn't know where the photos were taken or how many women went to the photo shoots.

Mr. Kelly first takes pictures of the women clothed and then eventually asks them to pose without their garments, Chief Shafer said.

The warnings concerned freshman Vicki Owen, 18.

"I am a little freaked out by it," she said. "You don't really expect it to happen on your campus. But when it does, it's a little scary."

Police said it does not appear that a crime has been committed, but it's against campus policy to solicit without permission. [Do you agree? Is there a crime that has been committed? Can you name it?]

"We would like people to know this is what this guy's doing out here. If he approaches you and you opt to go have photos taken with him, just kind of be aware the approach he's taking," Chief Shafer said. "Our warning is there just so that [the students] can make a rational decision."

Police are trying to make contact with Mr. Kelly, who has been described as a white male in his 20s with short, dark hair and a muscular build.

LONDON (Reuters) - A British company has developed a camera that can detect weapons, drugs or explosives hidden under people's clothes from up to 25 meters away in what could be a breakthrough for the security industry.

The T5000 camera, created by a company called ThruVision, uses what it calls "passive imaging technology" to identify objects by the natural electromagnetic rays -- known as Terahertz or T-rays -- that they emit.

The high-powered camera can detect hidden objects from up to 80 feet away and is effective even when people are moving. It does not reveal physical body details and the screening is harmless, the company says.

Rest of story.

[Who can name the movie that showed a device like this?]

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A policeman in a small New Zealand town did not let the fact that he was naked hold him back from chasing a thief trying to steal his car.

The off-duty constable was asleep at his home in Balclutha, in the lower South Island, when his wife woke him in the early hours, the New Zealand Press Association reported.

When the policeman realized the sound his wife heard was someone attempting to start the couple's car, he didn't let the fact he was stark naked hold him back, bursting out the door with nothing more than a torch.

Bikini car wash is closed

Web Posted: 05/10/2008 12:43 AM CDT

Colin McDonald
By order of city officials, bikini-clad women are no longer allowed to wash cars at a business on South Flores Street or at least until the owner of the controversial Bikini Car Wash fixes a drain and falls into compliance with city code.

After dozens of complaints from neighbors and passers-by that the carwash is hardly suitable for a street that includes a church and an elementary school, owner Ricardo Arsate was required on Friday to hand over the business's certificate of occupancy.

Porn Tax Considered As Solution To Budget Shortfall

LOS ANGELES - California state lawmakers are considering an unusual idea to solve the state's huge budget shortfall: Tax pornography.

The idea was proposed by a state assemblyman, and would impose a 25 percent tax on the production and sales of pornographic videos -- the vast majority of which are made in southern California.

It is unknown, however, how seriously lawmakers will take the idea or how the porn business would deal with the new tax. It is likely, though, that porn-makers would simply pass the cost along to consumers by making pornographic materials more expensive.

However, many economists believe that pornography is an industry with inelastic demand -- meaning market conditions typically don't affect consumers' desire for the product. In other words, it is believed that most porn consumers would continue to buy regardless of how much it cost.

A potential economic downside to the tax proposal is that porn producers could leave California to manufacture and distribute videos in other states that don't impose the tax.

Does this happen enough that they've come up with a specific crime for it?

As John McClain would say, "California."

10 airports install body scanners
Devices can peer under passengers' clothes
By Thomas Frank
USA TODAY

BALTIMORE - Body-scanning machines that show images of people underneath their clothing are being installed in 10 of the nation's busiest airports in one of the biggest public uses of security devices that reveal intimate body parts.

Details.

[How long before we discover some people going to the airport a LOT because they LIKE the exposure? There is a fetish for everyone. And what about screening the screeners for fetishes? Wouldn't a pedophile have a field day?]
