VIA Metropolitan Transit's board of trustees Tuesday approved a zero-tolerance policy on cell-phone use and text messaging by bus and van drivers, making the authority's rules the strictest in the state, board Chairman Henry Muoz said.

The new policy prohibits drivers from carrying cell phones and other electronic devices on their person. It also requires that phones remain off.

VIA previously allowed transit operators to carry cell phones as long as they were set to silent or vibrate.

Bus and van operators caught violating the new policy will be terminated immediately, Muoz said.
