Here's the situation, using big round numbers:

We have a defendant who was released on a $1000 bond. He skipped out. Eventually, he was located again and returned. The costs of bringing him back to the county were around $3000.

CCP 22.16 allows us to withhold from the bond the amount it cost us to secure his return. But in a situation like the above, where the cost of the defendant's return exceeds the amount of the bond, is there any authority that would allow us to charge the surety for the amount it cost the county over the amount of the bond? I'm coming up empty.

Well, never mind, we just found it. CCP 17.08(6).
