On the home page, Ruth Rendon of the Houston Chonicle regales us with how Clara Harris is dealing with prison life. Harris doesn't even mumble ONE WORD of regret for her husband's murder. Selected portions:

On prison life:

In the hourlong interview, Harris revealed:

-How she is adjusting to prison life, including her wake-up schedule and workload.
-Her fears about the safety of her children because of her notoriety.
-Her relationship with other inmates.
-Her children's psychologist warning her not to cry in front of her twin boys during their visits.
-Her hopes of being able to visit with Lindsey Harris, her stepdaughter and front-seat passenger in the Mercedes-Benz.
-Fears that her 20-year prison term will not be overturned on appeal.

Except for a brief interview with the Chronicle in May 2003, Harris has not spoken with the media until now. With her frustration over not being granted a new trial, Harris said she wanted to discuss her life after the killing.

On the victim's sons

The boys were 3 when their father died and 4 when their mother was sent to prison.

The boys' psychologist found them suffering from depression and separation anxiety and warned Harris not to cry in front of them, even if they are "happy tears."

Of the victim's daughter:

"They have kept her away. She has said she doesn't want to come back to Texas, but the boys told me that she was coming in the summer. I hope she comes," Harris said. "I wish there was a way to talk to her."

A rebuttal (thank goodness):

Marty Weber, a Houston attorney who represented Lindsey in a civil proceeding against her stepmother, said he did not recall Lindsey crying the loudest in court or saying she had taken her stepbrothers away from their mother.

I found it especially rich when the reporter tells us how old the twins were when their father "died," as though he had been afflicted with cancer! The shrink says the boys suffer from "seperation anxiety." No doubt they do....for both Mom and Dad. Just to prove she is a sociopath, the defendant throws in the lie about the poor teenage daughter: the one Harris gave the gift of being a witness to the murder of her own father.

And the big finale to that story is that she is suing her attorney over fees she still owes for expert witnesses, and claims that George Parnham was unprepared for her trial. Those who know George know he is never unprepared.

Such is the lot of the criminal defense attorney in high profile cases like these. It's not her fault that the jury convicted her of running over her husband in a fit of rage, rather, it is the fault of one of the few attorneys who could give her a fighting chance. She should be pleased that the jury found her guilty of the lesser and that she maxed out at 20. She could be doing a lifer for murder.

From The Chronicle of March 1, 2005:

For the six months before her trial, media outlets reported she had run over her husband three times. Prosecutors presented similar evidence during the trial, although Harris says the re-creation video would prove otherwise.

Never mind the REAL video...

Tivo was nice enough to grab this for me . . . Anyone else see this? They showed the defense video which was explained by Oprah to have been kept from the jury because the judge felt it was "misleading"

What was the reason the video was kept out?

Oprah interviews Clara Harris Thursday

Winfrey

How she was able to slip in and out of Gatesville, Texas, without publicity remains a mystery, but this much we know: Oprah Winfrey has interviewed convicted Clear Lake murderess Clara Harris and will air the interview on Thursday's show.

A spokeswoman for The Oprah Winfrey Show said Tuesday that Winfrey "went into the interview thinking one thing and came out thinking something completely different."

In 2003, Harris was found guilty of killing her husband, orthodontist David Harris, by running him over with her Mercedes. She is housed in the Mountain View Unit of the Texas prison system in Gatesville in Central Texas.

Winfrey conducted the interview with glass separating her from Harris. It was a one-camera, one-mike shoot, the spokeswoman said.

Winfrey will introduce each segment of Thursday's interview before an audience in her Chicago studio.

In addition to Harris telling her side of the story, the show will present a computer-enhanced re-enactment video, rejected at her trial, that Harris hopes will shed new light on her case. And her stepdaughter, Lindsay, who was in the car with her the night her father was killed, will comment on Harris and her crime. The show also promises an update on Harris' twin sons.
