Has anyone stopped to think that these people are driven to murder by the abuse they suffered as children, because they were poor, and had a learning disability, and were from a disadvantaged minority group, or were the subject of reverse discrimination? Or how about the ravages of their drug addiction, and their inability to reform because they couldn't grasp the concept of probation, parole, AA, NA, and psychologists and psychiatrists? Or the fact that their psychotropic medications made them feel "funny", or because they couldn't afford their ED medication? How many of these poor souls were victims of the "War on Christmas"?

One thousand and one reasons - no excuses................Big Grin

Since Officer Dan Nagle was murdered on 12-17-99, there have been at least 3 other murders at the McConnell Unit.  Various forms of capital killings by way of the killer serving time for 3G offense, also multiple defendants (OCA), etc.

Killings #10 & 11

Amid a profound media and civil liberties proponents revelation of the level of violence in the Texas prison -- which is actually NO pronouncement at all, two more homicides have been committed by incarcerated felons, serving time in Texas prison units. There have not been eleven killings in one year in TDCJ since 1997.

#10: At the Robertson maximum security prison, Elasko Thomas, a 38-year-old G5, living in 8 building, which is where the inmates who are one foot out of Ad Seg live, had his throat cut by his cellmate, Michael DeLoach, another G5 inmate, gang member, convicted murderer out of Harris County.

#11: During a July 31, 2012 "disturbance" (we call it a riot) involving at least 36 inmates at the Estelle unit in Walker County, Billy De Los Santos, G4 suffered severe head injuries. He died yesterday.

John: the numbers speak for themselves. Also, it wouldn't be a regular posting if convicts would quit killing each other inside the guarded, walled, monitored penitentiary. I am not qualified to say whether or not the level of violence is increasing. But I sincerely hope that, in future capital cases, when the defense puts on their hired gun experts who have retired from TDCJ, prosecutors will call those questionable characters to account for what is true and proveable.

Seems like prisons, particularly in general population on a life sentence, are a mighty dangerous place to be.

Number 12 for the year

September 29, 2012: Another convicted felon, serving out his sentence in the safe, secure and peace-prone Texas prison system has been killed.

I don't think convicts are paying attention to the claims that the prison is much more secure now than it was in years past. Maybe you bloggers should make sure they get your articles, so they can adjust their behavior to match your postulations. And by the way Dr. S., the cellmate who did the damage is 43 years old -- he didn't know he was supposed to be "aged-out" as you like to tell juries.

Victim: Wardell, Travis County agg robbery w/dw, 10-year sentence. "Suspect" (locked in the cell with him) Barefield, Tarrant County burglar, doing a whopping 5-years. Both of them were G5, you know, the worst of the general population inmates, living together.

Prison officials say the near quadrupling of the murder total appears to be an anomaly without a single cause — a deadly uptick that neighboring states say they haven’t seen, though they have seen increased violence overall, which Texas has not.

Details.

Continuing the tradition of peace and safety...

First homicide of 2013: Inmate Benton tied up and beaten by his cellie, 43-year-old Jesus Galindo. Assaulted on January 28, died on February 2. 177 total killings since 1984 - since at least that year, there has never been a year without at least one prison homicide.

Dallas article says escapes are down.

What do you think?

Details.

One explanation for a drop in escapes: prison is the place to meet people and network.

Details.

#2 for 2013

June 4, 2013 at the Price Daniel Unit, inmate Rice, serving 40 years out of Bell County, allegedly killed inmate Gray who was serving 7 years out of Smith County. This was before inmate Rice allegedly jumped on the back of a correctional officer and put a shank to the officer's neck, as the guard was about to discover the crime. They were able to gas Rice before he stabbed the officer, but too late for inmate Gray.

178 homicides inside Texas prisons since 1984. Still has never been a year without at least one prison killing, contrary to the testimony of at least one defense expert.
