U.S. doctors warn of poisoning from hand gels POSTED: 5:57 p.m. EST, January 31, 2007 BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- At least two people have become intoxicated by drinking hand-sanitizing gels, a potentially deadly habit, doctors reported Wednesday. A prison inmate and a hospitalitzed alcoholic both were treated for poisoning from the gels, which contain alcohol -- but not the same kind as found in beverages. Evidently people misunderstand the labels that show the gels, foams and liquids contain alcohol, the doctors said in separate letters to the New England Journal of Medicine. Cases of people drinking the hand gels because of their alcohol content have not previously been reported in major medical journals. "The Maryland Poison Center was called about a 49-year-old, usually calm prison inmate who was described as being 'red-eyed,' 'loony,' 'combative,' and 'intoxicated, lecturing everyone about life'," Dr. Suzanne Doyon of the Maryland Poison Center and Dr. Christopher Welsh of the University of Maryland School of Medicine wrote in one letter. "Other inmates and staff reported seeing this prisoner drinking from a gallon container of Purell hand sanitizer over the course of the evening. " In the second case, a 43-year-old man with alcoholism was treated for mysterious chest pains and other symptoms. "Before those results were obtained, the patient was seen in the bathroom drinking the alcohol-based hand wash from its dispenser," Dr. Ashkan Emadi and Dr. LeAnn Coberly of the University of Cincinnati wrote. "When asked why he ingested the hand cleaner, he pointed to the label, which read, 'Active ingredient 63 percent v/v isopropyl alcohol.' He explained that this percentage is higher than that in vodka," they added. It takes only a small amount of isopropanol to kill, by depressing the heart and central nervous system, they wrote. They suggested that makers of the hand gels change the labeling.

Meth Users Turning To Urine To Get High Heather Brown Reporting (WCCO) When Wright County deputies opened up a smelly rented storage locker last June, they had no idea what they would find. Inside a man had stored 50 gallon jugs of urine. "The officers that responded looked at it and said, 'yeah, that's odd,'" said Wright County Narcotics Sgt. Becky Howell. The deputies gave the go-ahead to the owners to throw out the urine. When they did, they got sick. A week and half later, that report hit Howell's desk. "I said, 'Oh my gosh, this is a meth lab, this is a urine extraction lab,'" Howell said. It's a new way to get meth. Some people drink the meth-tainted urine outright to get high. Others filter the drug back out through the cooking process.

Strawberry-flavored meth just as dangerous Web Posted: 02/02/2007 08:25 PM CST Itza Gutierrez KENS 5 Eyewitness News Most every kid loves strawberry-flavored gum, candy, and drinks, but now there's a strawberry-flavored methamphetamine that's causing concern across the country. This new meth, which was discovered in Nevada, is called "Strawberry Quick." It's pretty, pink and potent enough to kill. "It's telling kids, 'Hey, this is fun. It looks like candy. It's good,'" said Darrell Boyce, with San Antonio Fighting Back. "Hey, it's just as potent as any other drug; if you use it once you can die." What kid wouldn't be attracted to a powerful stimulant perfectly disguised? Strawberry quick is just a new name for a cheap drug that's made in homes, hotels and cars with dangerous, flammable chemicals. "In fact, battery acid is used, a lot of gasolines are used, a lot of toxic chemicals are used," Boyce said.

Medical Examiner: More Tests Needed In Smith Death (CBS) HOLLYWOOD, Fla. Prescription drugs were found in Anna Nicole Smith's hotel room, but there were no pills in her stomach, and investigators said Friday they are awaiting tests that would tell whether the former centerfold died of an overdose, as some close to her suspect. Dr. Joshua Perper, the Broward County medical examiner, said no illegal drugs were found in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. He would not identify the prescription drugs. But CNN quoted an unidentified law enforcement source as saying investigators found a large amount of prescription medicine, including Valium and antibiotics, and over-the-counter cold and flu medication. Perper said there were no pills in Smith's stomach and no other immediate indication of an overdose, but officials "do not exclude any kind of contribution of medication to the death." Describing signs of inflammation in Smith's heart, Perper said he saw "something which looks a little bit unusual," but added, "It may be nothing." He said it would take three to five weeks to conclude the investigation.

Prosecutors seek new charges in tampered soup case By ASSOCIATED PRESS JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) - County prosecutors have decided to pursue child cruelty charges against a man who has admitted he tampered with his children's soup in an attempt to get money from the Campbell Soup Co. William Allen Cunningham, 41, of Stockbridge pleaded guilty to communicating false claims last week in federal court. But Clayton County officials say the charges Cunningham pleaded guilty to do not address the harm done to his children. In a letter to Clayton County District Attorney Jewel Scott, county police Lt. Leslie Stone said a voice was given to the Campbell Soup Co. but not to the victims. "The family is deeply distressed that the focus has been taken off the children as the true victims," Stone wrote. "It is our job to pursue the rights of and justice for the people of Clayton County and in particular the voiceless, innocent victims." Cunningham's 3-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter were hospitalized twice in January 2006. Authorities said the first time he had forced them to eat soup laced with hot peppers and lighter fluid and the second time he used the prescription drugs Prozac and Amitriptyline both used to treat depression to poison the children. According to federal prosecutors, Cunningham called the soup company and threatened to sue. Under the terms of his federal plea agreement, Cunningham could be sentenced to as many as five years in federal prison when he is sentenced April 19. But Scott said the state case will be reopened and prosecutors will seek to indict Cunningham on five counts of child cruelty.

Austin officer accused of tossing bleach on ex He remains under investigation after incident. By Tony Plohetski AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Tuesday, February 13, 2007 An Austin police officer charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend poured bleach on her after the couple threw spaghetti on each other's apartment doors, according to an affidavit obtained Monday. The five-page document said officer Darren Carver, 39, told police that Katherine Zunker had been bothering him throughout the day and throwing food on his porch and car. He had reported several incidents to police, who recently arrested Zunker on a public intoxication charge. Carver told police that Zunker "has been jealous of his new girlfriend," the document said. Carver was arrested and charged Sunday with assault with injury/family violence, a Class A misdemeanor for which he could face up to a year in jail. He remains under a criminal and internal investigation. Neither Carver nor Zunker, who live in the same apartment complex on Dessau Road, could be reached for comment Monday. According to the affidavit, Carver told officers that Zunker stayed outside his front door Saturday night and repeatedly knocked on it. On Sunday morning, he said he heard something outside and found a bunch of spaghetti at the bottom of his front door. Carver gathered up the spaghetti and threw it on Zunker's door, the affidavit said. "Carver said moments later he heard something hit his front door again," it said. "Carver said he was walking by his front door this time when he heard the noise so he grabbed his cup of bleach water." He said he intended to throw it on Zunker's clothes as she got into her car, the affidavit said, but the door of Zunker's car hit his hand and knocked away the bleach. Zunker told police that Carver has thrown water in her face in the past.

Denver Zookeeper Dies From Jaguar Attack By CHASE SQUIRES Associated Press Writer DENVER A zookeeper died Saturday after a 140-pound jaguar mauled her in the doorway of its exhibit, and the big cat was fatally shot when it approached emergency workers treating the injured woman, the zoo said. The zookeeper, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a Denver hospital, where she died, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. The park closed after the shooting. It planned to reopen Sunday, but the feline building was to remain closed, officials said. "We are deeply saddened by this loss," said zoo President and CEO Clayton Freiheit, adding that the zoo sends its condolences to her family. "This keeper was a part of our family and we too are grieving the loss of one of our own," he said. Zoo officials did not know how the mauling occurred or what led up to the attack, spokeswoman Amy Sarno said. The investigation may center on how the jaguar came in contact with the zookeeper. Under zoo policy, staff cannot be in any large cat exhibit when the animal is there. The zookeeper had undergone regular safety training for the exhibit, had shadowed veteran keepers and had attended mandatory safety meetings, officials said. The jaguar, a 6-year-old male named Jorge, was shot by a zoo employee and the public was never at risk, the zoo said. The big cat had been at the zoo for nearly two years. The facility added a 16-month-old female jaguar named Caipora in December, the zoo's Web site said. The female was to be paired with Jorge when she was old enough. The Web site notes, "The jaguar is the third largest cat in the world behind the tiger and lion. Yet, they have the most powerful jaw of all the big cats."

There is no indication in the news reports whether the alleged catfish weapon was noodled or corn-fed and farm raised. Catfish Assault Reported at Tenn. Diner BULLS GAP, Tenn. The folks at Di's Diner were assaulted with a catfish dinner of their own making. Employee Tina Henry and owner Dwight Jenkins told authorities a "blond, heavy-frame female" tried to slip out of their Bulls Gap eatery, about 60 miles northeast of Knoxville, with a pilfered catfish meal Friday night. "Tina states that as the suspect was paying, they told her she would have to pay for the dinner in her purse," Hawkins County Sheriff's Cpl. David Lafollette wrote in his report. "She then became mad, throwing money at the cash register. The suspect then walked outside, and Tina and Dwight followed," the report said. "The suspect then threw the fish out of her purse at Tina, hitting her in the back." Henry wasn't hurt, but the $7.99 catfish dinner was ruined. Witnesses say the suspect fled with a man in a red and black Ford pickup. They didn't get the license number. As an aside, I wonder if the catfish was grilled or fried? Mom pleads guilty to using baby as a weapon ERIE, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to swinging her 4-week-old son like a bat to hit her boyfriend during a fight, fracturing the infant's skull in the process. Chytoria Graham, 27, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child under a plea agreement with prosecutors. By pleading guilty, Graham acknowledged that on October 8 she grabbed her son Jarron by his feet and swung him, hitting her boyfriend and seriously injuring the child. At Graham's preliminary hearing in December, paramedic Betty Schau, who treated the baby, recalled that Graham was crying and disheveled when medical crews arrived. She testified that Graham told her, "I swung him. I swung him like a bat." The judge ordered a psychological examination for Graham before her sentencing, set for May 8. The charges carry a minimum of five years in prison because the child was under age 12. Two lesser charges were dropped. Graham's previous attorney had said Graham did not use her child as a weapon, that the boy was hurt during a fight between the two adults and that Graham lied to authorities about how the injury occurred to protect her boyfriend. Her current attorney, public defender Julia Dudics, however, said Tuesday that the choice to plead guilty was Graham's. Dudics declined further comment except to say that Graham had told her she was depressed. Jarron, who made a full recovery, and Graham's four other children are currently in the custody of her parents. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. Flaming torch used in daylight bank heist CREDIT UNION: Police are seeking a man who threatened to burn a teller. By MEGAN HOLLAND Anchorage Daily News (Published: March 6, 2007) A man swinging a flaming torch robbed a Fairview bank Monday afternoon, threatening to set fire to people and burn down the building if his demands weren't met. Late Monday, law enforcement authorities were still looking for the masked robber who made off with an undisclosed amount of money. The man stormed the Alaska USA Federal Credit Union branch at Seventh Avenue and Juneau Street at about 3:45 p.m., waving the homemade torch -- a T-shirt tied around a yard-long metal pole and set afire, said FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez. He yelled at customers to get down on the floor. Customers scattered and were able to flee the bank. The robber threatened to burn the teller before the teller handed over the money, Gonzalez said, and then fled on foot. Following FBI policy, Gonzalez would not say how much the robber got. Police later recovered the still smoldering T-shirt outside the bank, they said. Officers combed surrounding areas looking for the robber for hours after the incident, police said. Gonzalez said that in his more than 15 years at the FBI in Anchorage he could not recall a robber using a torch as a weapon. This is the first bank robbery in Alaska in 2007. Of the 17 bank robberies in 2006, all but one were solved.

Nail guns may have been covered in previous posts. I also had a defendant who attempted to commit suicide by nail gun, which did not result in death but in a permanent headache because they could not surgically remove the nail from his brain. I also know from reading News of the Weird that rarely does death result from a suicide by nail gun. Go figure. Teen Survives Being Shot In The Heart With A 3" Nail CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Can you imagine getting shot in the heart - and then living to tell the tale? A 17-year-old from Dexter will be telling the story for years to come. It turns out he survived because he left the nail in his heart until he got to the hospital. "I thought I was going to die," Matt Robinson says. You would too if you shot a nail through your heart. Matt calls it an accident he'll never forget. "I was helping frame up a barn and the guy was lowering the gun down the ladder to me. The nail gun swung, my finger hit the trigger and it hit me in the chest," he explains. The three and a quarter inch nail, went through Matt's right ventricle, and came out the other side. "I dropped the gun and looked down and I could see the head of the nail stuck on the outside of my shirt. I wanted to take it out, but I was scared and didn't know what to think really," he says. Had Matt pulled the nail out - the St. Louis doctor who performed heart surgery on him says he would have died. Dr. Hendrick Barner pulled the nail out about four hours after the accident. While inside, the nail acted like a plug - leaving no space for blood to seep out. Still, the computer generated 3D images leave even technicians in shock. "It's the first time I've seen a foreign body through the heart and someone survived that, and was actually talking - it's surprising to us," one technician tells Heartland News. "It was bad timing!" Matt's girlfriend, Brittany Morgan says. Pregnant with his twins, she can joke about the scare now - but at the time, the episode with the nail gun terrified her. "Everybody told me if it goes through your heart you die, so I was really scared," she says. As for Matt - he's not giving up on his construction job just yet. "Construction's something I like to do -you get to do different stuff,' he says. Amazingly, the accident happened on a Monday, Matt had surgery that day, and was up and walking by Wednesday. So a remarkable recovery and an unbelievable story almost any way you look at it. Matt's still on pain medication and will probably not be able to return to work for a couple of months. He says the next heart stopping moment he expects to have will be the birth of his twin babies in the next few days.
